It has been a while since I did a book review, I think and I am sure you would know better? So I decided to start this for this week after a nice ramen lunch at Causeway Bay!!!
Malcolm Gladwell, is an author that I do keep a close track of, I do have other specific titles on my bookshelf by him. For this title, "David and Goliath", I cannot say is the latest release since it has been in bookstalls for a while. I do not remember what strikes me to read it or want to read it so bad. My mom and I like to shop as well as skim read in book shops, it just happen we had the best experience there for some reasons.........oh well just a note if you wanna have a good mother-daughter moment a book shop walk may be good enough instead of the shopping centers! Surprising enough when I told my mom I wanna read this book, she goes don't you know this mythical story before - I said no......I am kinda surprised that her generation always seems know more than us the Gen XYZ haha.
Anywho, so I was able to finish this book and read a second time to take some notes. It is one of the book you would like to finish it in one go because I was very eager to find out how the underdogs could win. Unfortunately this book does not explain how and how other could copy the approach otherwise we would all be rich by now, won't we! It does illustrates examples which exists in different envionrments, societies and time period - whether is in ancient civilisation or in the present day.
One of the things I learn is about relative depreivation - where we as an individual always compare ourselves to a small local population instead to the population at large. With that said, the book itself had a very good example which I do recommend for you to read and absorb yourself. I could compare my own experiences as to I somehow out of the blue I want to study architecture and some how I got myself into a bridging course where I could find out if I like it or not and proceed without wasting much time etc. I studied the same courses along with the architectural students - I was very much discouraged because I never taken "art" and seems like an idiot in terms of contruction, modelling compared to the male students. Luckily, there is no reason to abandon the course or give up the degree, I just proceeded with computing major and lived through it. I still get questioned today during interview why did you do that course.......it seems a very much curious question really for anyone who never taken art seriously in high school to dive herself into an architectural degree........is like who would do that......... I am so glad I did it and can get that crossed off and move on to the next thing I want!
The smarter your peers, the dumber you feel.
The dumber you feel, the more likely you are to drop out - quoting from the book
The blook clearly summarised the point where those who rised up in the current society are those have failed many times and developed the courage to withstand all negative forces!
I want to develop this kind of courage, I am not perfect, I don't think any of us are but our different experience make us what we are ...... so independently we could grow and shine!
The book does maps out different people and instances where the "underdogs", "misfits" survived and suceeded in "battling the giants" like david.......
Incognito by David Eagleman, is an interesting book that caught my eye while touring at Eslite at Hysan Causeway Bay. It tries to explain why your brain does certain things. Something I learnt from this book, includes the "illusion of truth effect", which explains individuals are more likely to believe a myth, when you have heard it before. For my blogging experience, this is highly applicable, we see one blogger mention one product, and the other blogger as well, and we seem to swirl a whole new beauty phenomenon some how......is very weird but truth in a sense - don't you agree?
Another phenonmenon is how male are more driven visually than females - I think we all know that but to illustrate in neuroscientfic terms is kind of another theory somehow. So males are more attracted to beautiful females, they are more motivated than the other way around.......
I would recommend this book to anyone who really desire to find out why our brain make us does certain things. This is a good book to put the rationale out there.......before we think ourselves are crazy.....haha.
