Healthy Warning: Grain Brain
June 3, 2014

How are we doing in June? Time to review our healthy habits. If you are wondering why I am reviewing a lot of organic beauty products at the moment is because I have been reading this latest book, "Grain Brain" by David Perlmutter. It is a wake up call for me to review my daily habits from food to beauty essentials.
I guess I always knew we need to eat better by getting organic products, using coconut oils, less fat, moderate carbs - but knowing and action is two different thing so it takes a little bit of time for the knowledge to sink in and to really take action.
As this book suggests, the diet of high fat and low carb is the best diet for the brain - it would help to minimise the risk of alzeimer, dementia or even chronic headaches. The rationale for this is our brain needs fat to function and to keep the cells alive. When we eat carbs that contains, wheat or gluten it just gives our body high sugar plus high insulin which our pancreas will keep producing insulin in expecting more sugar - just like a bad cycle. It just hit me that any gluten or wheat products are bad for me. So I have been reading the labels for any sign of these. It scares me to find out that I have a lot of food to avoid since I was more of a low fat, high carb person.
My new diet lately, is to avoid any bread, coke and pastas and to take more meat, fish and almond milk for the past 3 weeks. The reason I need stop drinking coke is because I use to take a 750ML every 2 days, I was pretty much an addict since there was free supply of coke to employees at where I use to work. Coke was so bad to me to a point that I had a crave for the sugar high but my stomach can't take too much of the acid and develop ulcer all the time. So is good to have a clean break once and for all.
Next is, I use to have a piece of bread every day for breakfast and I do find it a bit hard to digest for some reasons. I guess for now I know is because of the glutten or wheat that makes my stomach work a bit more and I always feel tired. I do have occasional migrain so hopefully my new diet approach would help to ease the pain + my coconut oil pulling ritual.
Another important point to stress, glutten is everywhere from the food we eat to the facial products we use and body products as well. It would be difficult to avoid all of them at once. I do take precaution to read the labels on what I am buying now. Therefore I have been trying hard to find out organic products like, Tarte, Hourglass, Organi, Antipodes and Dr. Jackson - because I do not wish to put any harmful chemicals on my face or even harm the environment from its production or degradation when we chuck them out on our garbage. I just want to treat myself better and for the environment. So I am trying hard to use products without glutten, without parabens or even cruelty free. I do urge you to try organic products so your skin will feel better, less sensitivities for the long term.
It just appears to me quite significantly in seeing myself age overtime, we are not as young and productive as to when we were a teenager. I have seen my skin with more wrinkles and more dark spots - which may be a sign of cells degrading due to my diet, my stress and the environmental damages. Of course, I do not wish to see any more damage and are currently working hard to seek remedies to prevent my brain cells from dying - which they do not reproduce any rate faster than we age......I guess this is the message I wish to raise with you.
If you wish to care for yourself more, I would urge you to read this book which has significantly change my diet and habits.
On a little side, I just wish to share with you a little story when I went to the drugstore to get a BB cream which I wanted to try. So I decided to go to the drugstore after seeing the BB cream I wish to try last Friday. In reading the labels I saw ingredients I do not like, such as PEG, alcohol etc......so I fight myself hard to put it down and walk out. I did....and I guess in knowing more of what is exactly in products it could streamline your spending - although money saved may be spent on more expensive organic products with health benefits - is still better than a shopaholic........hope you like my story.
Take care and stay healthy.
xoxo isutave.
